LATEST WAR NEWS
The following is a summary of the latest war news: RAIDS ON MALTA Little was done in the Axis air raids on Malta. An attempted sixth attack was driven oft* before the enemy planes came within range of our guns. The attacks were the heaviest for three months. In one attack six Junkers bombers were escorted by no fewer than 65 fighters. The enemy made over 200 sorties. The 15 enemy planes destroyed do not include many probably destroyed. RUSSIAN FRONT Further attacks by two battalions of German infantry have been repulsed by the Russians at Stalingrad. The Germans have thrown in big reinforcements at Mozdok in another effort to break through to Grosny. CHINA In eastern China the Chinese have ambushed a Japanese transport column on the road between Hangchow and Kinhwa. Heavy losses were inflicted on the enemy. ENGLAND Enemy planes were over the south-coast of.. England to-day. They dropped bombs which caused casualties and damage. Some bombs fell near a home for crippled children. A boy of three lost his life and other children were injured. MR CHURCHILL'S SPEECH The Prime Minister's summing up of Allied achievements in August and September was greeted with applause. He said they had been the least bad months since January. British and American shipbuilding had overtaken losses, bombs had been rained on Germany, United States troops were pouring into the British Isles. The Prime Minister said that in the speeches of all the enemy leaders the dull, low, whining note of fear predominated. He paid a great tribute to the splendid fight being made by the invincible Russian armies.. Goering, said Mr Churchill, had hastened to declare that the decision to invade Russia was Hitler's alone. EUROPE To-day's news from all over Europe bears out Mr Churchill's statement that German reprisals would be found to increase in severity. Executions on a large scale are reported from many enemy occupied countries.
