WHY HE REFUSED TO FIGHT SHOCK TO HOLLYWOOD News that Lew Ayres had gone into a camp for conscientious objectors in Oregon came as a shock to Hollywood. Metro, and some of his friends, thought he was joining the Army. Lengthy statement he issued when on the train has caused a sensation. Many people here think his action will mean social and film oblivion. Lew Ayres made a name for himself in the role of a German soldier in "All Quiet On the Western Front." He says that this had a tremendous influence on his outlook, but that his decision not to fight was the result of years of mature consideration. Lew. who is 33. succeeded in convincing the draft-board that he was a genuine conscientious objector, morally opposed to war or killing.
