We take the following paragraph from the Bay of Plenty Times of fifty years ago.
“Yesterday afternoon the competition for the gold medal for place kicking commenced. There were
fifteen competitors and two kicks each were taken when time was called. The kicking as a whole was about as poor an exhibition as could be imagined. F. Robertson and W. Horne being the only goalkickers. Yesterday’s game was undoubtedly the best played this season. The form shown by many of the players being well up to expectations. It is only fair for us to say that the various departments of the game of Rugby were at times brought out in yesterday’s play more conspicuously than we have often seen in better matches, for instance there were beautiful dribbles started, rushes were frequent, passing was freely indulged in, while dodging, fending and running were among the more prominent features of the game. When we have said all this we must acknowledge that in other most important points the game was a sad disappointment. There was an utter want of skill displayed by many, while the backs did a lot of work at times, it was evident to an onlooker, that they had to make their own play. To the best of our knowledge the ball was not passed back once from a line-out yesterday, also the want of a good centre half playing was apparent from start to finish. Although the collaring was not altogether bad, it must be through faulty attempts in this department that the game was lost to the Captain. The game ending 16 to 5.”
