The following is a summary of the latest war news: — ’ BURMA News is awaited of the land fighting in Burma. U.S.A. Mr Cordell Hull was asked at a press conference if he had anything to say which would reassure the people ol China, Netherlands East Indies and Australia. He said that they could rest assured that those in charge of U.S. strategy would work out the host policy for the defence of the Western Pacific. Dr. Van Mook, Governor-Gen-eral of the Dutch East Indies, said that he was confident that the Netherlands East Indies would now hold on all right. He had had a lot of good news i from President Roosevelt and felt more optimistic to-day. CRITICISM OF BKOOKEPOPHAM Lord Tren chard describes Lord Addison’s criticism of Sir Robert Brooke-Popham as regrettable. Mr Menzies said it was not e,|j. Robert Rrooke-Popham s fault that there was a shortage of planes in Malaya. MEDITERRANEAN The R.A.F. has raided Catania in Sicily. Many pianos were set on fire. Several Jn. 88 s and Me. 1 Oh's were shot down over Malta. RUSSIA Advance continues on all fronts. The Russian armfes are now moving forward to the next phase of their great offensive, says an observer.
