RED CROSS

VISIT OF DIRECTOR ADDRESS IN PRESBYTERIAN MALE On Thursday evening last, Miss E. P. Tennent, Director of Red Cross and V.A.D. nursing, addressed a. meeting of Red Cross members in St. Peter’s Hall, but owing to the boisterous evening and counter attractions, the attendance was not large. However, Miss Tennett’s address was attentively listened to by an enthusiastic audience. After outlining the history of the Red Cross, and explaining the origin of the Red Cross, the aims and objects of the Society, the speaker passed on to the V.A.D, training, for service in times of emergency, disaster or war, and stressed the neces-

sity and advantage of being prepared. It was explained that this work was done usually by the younger members of the Society and the training was such that made for efficiency in the home if it was not needed in an emergency. There was, however, a definite possibility of New Zealand Y.A.D.’s being appointed to military hospitals established throughout the country. At the conclusion of the address numerous questions were asked and answered; the procedure taken in the larger centres and hospitals was explained, and the duties of V.A.D.’s in each branch of the service and the likely appointments after training and registration.

The Rev. Father Eccleston occupied the chair and introduced the speaker and later in his usual humorous style moved a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker which was carried by acclamation. Morning Tea On Friday mornifig about thirty ladies, members of the Red Cross Guild, entertained Miss Tennent at morning tea in Devonport Road when everyone present was personally introduced to the guest, and a enjoyable time was spent. Miss Tennent by request gave an informal talk and answered many questions relating to the activities of the Society, this being much appreciated by those present. The Mayor'ess. Mrs L. R. Wilkinson, in a nice little speech, then expresed the pleasure of the members at having the opportunity of meeting Miss Tennent and their gratitude for her interesting and instructive talks.

Visit to Lady Galway Depot Before her departure from Tauranga, Miss Tennent paid an informal visit to the Lady Galway Guild, and complimented the ladies of the Guild on their work. The quality and variety of the garments shown her, she considered splendid, and she was particularly charmed with the rugs and patch-work quilts, which she pronounced were both comfortable looking and attractive, being of artistic design and colouring. Miss •Tennent was surprised to learn that these were all made up from scraps of coloured materials contributed by many sympathisers of the refugees and victims of bomb raids.
