London Typists are Still Smart

From luxury clothes to the averagewoman in the street it's wonderful how amazingly smart the working girls of London still manage to be. It's amazing because of the life most of them now have to lead, a London, writer says. A girl in a shelter was a typical example. She was a city typist Working from 9 till 5.30 p.m.. and each night she had to sleep in her clothes. t)n leaving her office in the evening she goes straight to the Tube shelter near her home, has a sandwich supper there; can't change, into old clothes there because of the lack of privacy.

In the morning she has time for only a very quick wash and brush up, and change of clothes while she eats breakfast, before rushing off to work again. Yet she looked pin neat when I saw her. . ~.• •

"Girls like her have every excuse now to go around looking a little unkempt and weary. But it's an everlasting tribute to their spirit that they don't," continues' the message.'

"You see them setting off work each morning, from the Tube., stations where they probably have., been sleeping, freshly made up..and , smiling. And at night they treat, their public shelter as a beauty parlour; you see them creaming their. faces, brushing their hair with the greatest care, determined tp keep, up . their personal appearance in spite of * everything."
