WHAKAMARAMA NOTES

(From Our Correspondent) To date, the year 1941 has been good to the farmer in this district anyway. It provided a spell of fine weather to allow hay to be safely harvested, and in most cases the job went through without a break. Then rain fell sufficient for growing crops and giving new life to pasture land.

And still the farmer has a growl —this one has “one anyway. The Whaka road is one of the roughest in the county, and really needs attention, and quite a lot of metal to put it in order. Ragwort

Several blocks of ragwort-infested land have been put under cultivation of late months, thereby improving the position considerably. On the other hand there are several blocks Of pakeha-owned land that are badly infested and are at present a mass of yellow bloom, so the newly cultivated land must receive a good dressing of seed. Some of these blocks have given trouble for years, and what little that has been done to them has always been done too late. However, the Inspector covered the Whaka road recently, and if all are given fair .treatment then prosecutions will probably follow, as it is not right that one man should struggle to keep his land clean while another only does a little under pressure, and usually to the extent of re-seeding his property. Albino Blackbirds A word to those nature lovers who have communicated with the writer on the matter of albino blackbirds. A particularly hard season has. contributed largely towards keeping the Whaka notes out of print, but the next should not be long in appearing, and should be of more than ordinary interest.
