TRAGIC CRASH

Sydney, Jan. 17. Two Australian Air Force planes collided in mid-air and crashed into the sea three miles. from the coast oft" Terrigal, midway between Sydney and Newcastle. Only one occupant of the planes so far has been rescued. It is not ascertained yet how many were aboard each machine. The survivor was rescued by a coastal vessel after clinging to the tail of a machine, which had been smashed off in the impact. An eye-witness said three planes were flying in formation and were making sharp turns when two of them collided. One crashed straight down into the sea. The other travelled several miles before it also crashed into the sea. An intensive search of the area was made by planes from Sydney and Newcastle, by two coastal vessels and by fishing boats, but no sign of the other occupants of the crashed machines was found.
