Parents anxious for the movie careers of their talented children might do well to take a leaf from young Tommy Kelly’s note-book of experience. Such a leaf might read: “Make the movie scouts come to you.” That’s precisely what freckle-faced, very Irish Tommy and his parents did, with the result that the unspoiled youngster was handed the biggest assignment out of the year. Tommy’s current assignment is Columbia’s “Military Academy” and he was not so long ago an unsuspecting participant in a search for a boy to play the title role in “Tom Sawyer.” David O. Selznick is said to have tested thousands of lads for this part.
Meanwhile Tommy, who probably thought of Hollywood as either something to burn or whittle, was quietly attending school in New York. During a recess, a scout caught sight of him, put the qusetion to his parents and soon the lad was Hollywood bound. He has not returned to New York since.
