Join the Home Guard. An appeal to bos's leaving school to join the Home Guard was made by the rector of Southland Boys' High School (Dr. G. H. Uttley) at the annual break-up ceremony. The Inspector-General of the New Zealand Forces (Major-General Sir Andrew Russell), when on a visit to Invercargill, had asked him to persuade more youths to join the Home Guard, said Dr. Uttley. They could do a very valuable work for their country. He hoped that those leaving school would take the opportunity of offering their services. Relic of Polar Regions. Scott's expedition to the South Pole out of what materials were available to him. For the base of the bag the sailor took ordinary sailor's canvas. He decorated the bag first of all with a piece of seal-skin, and then with hair from one of the Siberian ponies which accompanied the expedition. The job was completed with a little binder twine.
