Hints for the Motorist

VERSE FOR

TO-DA Y

“Thou will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusted! in Thee. Trust_ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is (the Rock of Ages) everlasting strength” (Isaiah 2 6:3, 4).

PERFECTION OF PEACE “Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin? The Blood of Jesus whispers peace within.” What a precious privilege the child of God has, in thalt he can turn from the world’s unrest and uncertainty to the God of Peace. “Life hastens on. days come and go. The world in turmoil heaves. And souls are tossing to and fro Like falling Autumn leaves. But those who find their home in God Are fearless of 'the past— And future, since He loves and cares For those whom He holds fast.” There is a peace the world cannot give, but thousands know from experience what it means to sing “Oh the peace ray Saviour gives.” Let us note two truths in 'the above Scripture for our comfort and encouragement. I—The1 —The Human Heart in the Bosom of Perfect Peace. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace.” This is the “peace of God” which the world can neither give nor take away. The peace of the world rises and falls, and finally fails altogether, but this is an abiding peace. It is the peace which Jesus gives; the inner calm experienced in the will of God “while all without tumultuous seems.” Let God’s people turn their eyes from the troublous waters of life’s circumstances to (a) The Author of this peace, 67en God Himself —“Thou.” Gazing upon Him, our hearts will sing “Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.” Then take to heart the needed lesson of (b) Dependence for this Peace: “Wilt keep.” The more we know ourselves, the more convinced we are that we need no less a power than Omnipotence to keep us. Many there are who can bear testimony to the fact that our God is both able and willing to keep under all circumstances. Blessed assurance, “While I hold, lam held.” This brings us to the third thought, (c) The Experience of this Peace: “Thou wilf keep him in perfect peace.” Now consider — II —The Great Secret in the Experience of God’s Peace. “In perfect peace . . . whose mind, is stayed on Thee.” It is when the mind is yielded to the Holy Spirit and to the efficacy and influence of Calvary that the heart is filled with His peace. Oh! the blackness and horror which can fill the heart when the mind is given up to the horrid suggestions of the Devil. “But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Note (a) The Believer’s Responsibility: “Whose mind is stayed on Thee.” Whose mind? Why, your mind! Your meditation! Who is responsible for these? Included in this is (b) The Believer’s Choice: Because so many thoughts surge and clamour for a place, the believer must make the choice. As we are faced with some alternative, the Holy Spirit whispers. “My grace is sufficient for thee.” Then ponder th*e truth (c) Peace through a Person; “In perfect peace . . stayed on Thee.” Our adorable Lord. Who gave His life to save us. still says “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you.” As a mother’s mind can be filled with thoughts of her boy far from home, so our minds can be filled with thoughts of our Saviour Who loved us and gave Himself for us; Who reigns on high to intercede for us; and Who is coming again to receive us unto Himself. What possible strength is here for you and me! Stayed upon God! Held in the mighty embrace of His loving, powerful arms. “O Soul of mine, though others fail, Thy God around thee stands: The Maker of the Universe Holds thee in His strong hands. Thy faintest sigh, each falling tear He marks that He may cast His compensations round The life Of me. Whom He holds fast. “Dwell deep, then ever deep, in God Rest in His love and wait; In days to come, He will explain Life’s riddles, small and great. Now is the time to trust: in Heaven j Faith’s mission will be past; Merged into sight, there to behold The One Who held us fast.”
