QUEENSLAND GETS BIG NAVY ORDERS

Melbourne, Dec, 22, Orders totalling nearly £2s®,©ss for engines and other machinery have already been placed in Queensland j engineering shops by the Navy and ; the supply and Development departments. The machinery is for naval craft; under construction. Some of It has already been deliv- ; ered, and the shops are engaged In ! •completing current orders. The principal items being manufactured in Queensland include sets | of main propelling engines, diesel electric generating sets, sets of | steering gear machinery, eraporating and distilling plants, and bilge j pumps Some of this work has been allotted to the Queensland Government railway worksMps at Ipswich, and | the remainder to private firms, ineluding Walkers, of Maryborough, Sargents, of Brisbane, and the Toowoomba foundry. It is anticipated that Queensland firms will benefit by the .allocation of I a proportion of an order for approxi-. mutely £ 50$, 00 0 worth of propelling engines, which is now the subject of inquiry and negotiation with engineering firms throughout the Commonwealth, The work .already in hand is additional to construction of naval vessels proceeding in Queensland, and to various orders of minor items of equipment for naval purposes.
