WEEK-END RUGBY

AUCKLAND CLUB GAME

CANCELLED

Advice was received yesterday evening by Mr A. C. Ishenvood secretary of the Tauranga Rugby Lmon, that the Eden Football Club junioi team would now not be able to-make the trip to Tauranga on Satuiday in view of the recent decision of the Oil Fuel Controller to curtail long trips for sports purposes. This is the second game arranged by the Tauranga Union for recent week-ends which has had to be cancelled because of transport difficulties. Although these set-backs lune been received with customary sporting philosophy, this second cancellation will no doubt be a disappointment also to those Rugby enthusiasts and supporters who had been anticipating the visit of new players to the district.

Rugby followers, however. will have plenty to interest them on Saturday when the opportunity will now he taken for the play-off for the Green Cup by Cadets and Rangataua juniors, following their no-point draw last week-end, and also for the Gilhey Cup between Rangataua and Judea seniors.

A repetition of last Saturday’s play under more favourable conditions than were ruling, should give Rugby supporters every encouragement to be present. The high standard and closely contested game last week-end under such adverse conditions speaks highly of the two contesting- teams. As stated in these columns a week ago, both the Cadet and Rangataua junior teams have been responsible for some of the most spectacular and constructive football throughout the whole of the season. Heavier than Cadets, Rangataua play a bustling type • of game which has invariably found the weak links in their opponent’s defence. On the other hand the Cadet defence is one of the strongest and fastest that has been known in Tauranga junior football for several seasons. The senior game will also prove to be, as previously stated, a battle of giants. Both Rangataua and Judea are heavily built sides with good turns of speed. The recently improved play of Judea, which, has been instrumental in their being one of the finalists will have to be continued more than ever on Saturday if they are to register a win over the robust and bustling Rangataua forwards.

The referees appointed to control the game's are Mr Haycock for the seniors, and Mr Wilson for the juniors.

With the end of the season in sight, enthusiasm for football rapidly wanes as the thoughts of other and more seasonal sports takes the mind of sports supporters, but the Union, who are making no gate charge on Saturday, anticipate a good attendance for what may possibly prove to be the last of Club football in Tauranga this season.
