SHEARERS FROM AUSTRALIA

An attempt is to be made by the South Canterbury Primary Production Council to bring as many blade shearers as possible from Australia. This step is to be taken on the recommendation of Mr. J. C. Leckie, representative of workers’ organisations on the council, to relieve the shortage of experienced men. Mr. Leckie said at a meeting of the, council that more than *SO shearers had enlisted from South Canterbury alone, and therefore there was every prospect of a shortage of experienced men. He advised the council to make arrangements to bring experienced men from Australia, and recommended that the questions of zoning shearing sheds and of training young shearers at the fate of one to each board'of six shearers should be given consideration.
