Borough Inspection

REPORT OF DUTIES UNDERTAKEN FOR AUGUST

SMALL ISSUE OF BUILDING PERMITS

That the August issue of building permits was the lowest since December last, w'as reported by the Borough Inspector, Mr H. L. Potter, at the fortnightly meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council held yesterday evening and presided over by His Worship the Mayor, Mr L. R. Wilkinson.

larly on Friday mornings, was referred to by Cr H. W. F. King, who considered this to be a particularly dangerous practice. Cr King was of the opinion that some form of drastic action should be taken although he was fully aware that the Inspector could not possibly be informed, or notice, all the offenders in the course of hfs duties. It was pointed out by Inspector Potter, that when such a breach was observed a warning was issued to the offending party.

The Inspector reported that 'only two permits were issued to erect dwellings, one estimated to cost £ 740 and another £ 900, while permission was granted to build three accessory buildings to a value of 63. Pees amounted to £ 5 15s. Dealing, with the recent remarks of Cr H. W- F. King, Chairman of the, Works Committee; on the many unsightly residences in the south of the borough which did not in any way conform to the Town Planning Regulations, Mr Potter stated that in order to fulfil the Council’s instructions with regard to furnishing«a report on the situation, an extensive survey would have to be carried out and the work involved would take some time to complete. Inspections were being made as opportunity permitted, he said, and a full report should be available by the end of the year. Infectious Diseases Investigations had been carried out and reports forwarded to the Medical Officer of Health, relative to one case of cerebro ■ spinal meningitis notified on August 30 j according to the report. This was the first case notified in the Borough for many years, and as yet there was no indication of the source- of infection. ’ Attention had also been, given to four cases of pulmonary tuberculosis which occurred in the County while Inspector Turley was on annual leave. * Food samples were taken at Mount Maunganui, Katikati and Tauranga, and forwarded for analysis. One milk sample contained an appreciable amount of sandy dirt and the vendor had been warned. Traffic Frequent patrolling after sunset was taken during the month, continued the report, and breaches of regulations checked, including cyclists without lights or rear reflectors, motor vehicles with defective headlamps and .tail-lamps, and drivers exceeding 30 m.p.h. No excessive speeding had been noticed. The question, of double banking parking in the town area, particu-

Noxious Weeds

The prevalence of noxious weeds within the Borough was a point raised by Cr J. M. Daines, who, in view of the persistence of this menace, inquired as to the reason. Cr C. S. Moffatt stated that from his observations the Borough Council were the worst offenders.

The procedure of having to issue two warning notices and make visits before legal action could be taken, was outlined by the Inspector, who stated that this work had been under constant observation.

Cr Daines moved that the Inspector be empowered to take the fullest action allowed by law for the eradication of noxious weeds from frontages and sections within the Borough boundary.

The motion was seconded by Cr King and carried. Attention was drawn by Cr Daines to the erection of a certain dwelling in the south of the Borough which bias been the cause of unfavourable comment on lack of town planning, and was referred to by the Inspector in his report. Cr Daines considered that the necessary alterations required to bring the house into conformity with the regulations had not been carried out in spite of the recent resolution of the Council that >this should be done. Ikwas, however, pointed out by Cr A. A. Fleming, that the roof had been raised to cqme into line with the statutory regulations. He was of the opinion that the Council had ho jurisdiction regarding the size of a house or the rooms as long as the size of the stud and timber conformed to the town planning regulations. The Inspector also assured Cr Daines that the necessary alterations had been undertaken. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Daines, the Inspector’s report was adopted.
