SALT WATER CAR DAMAGE

Brisbane, Aug. Car-owners in Brisbane, prior to 1925, when the streets were, washed with salt water, saved the chassis and mudguards of their vehicles rust by having them painted with red lead and bitumised paint. Mudguards not treated were rusted through by brine in two years. Motorists claimed that damage amounting to thousands of puunds annually was being done to their vehicles, and it also was found that tramlines were being affected. The Greater Brisbane Council, immediately it was formed, stopped the spraying with salt water. The main pipe from the river to the reservoir where the salt water was held was also corroded by salt, and would have needed replacing after 192 6.
