Patriotic Concert

The box plan for the Patriotic Concert organised by the Medlians Club was not very encouraging up to yesterday afternoon, but fortunately it Avas not a complete indication. By about ten minutes past eight last night the Civic Avas moderately filled, and there should be a small amount to pay in to the Soldiers’ Christmas Parcels Fund. While patriotic work is begun with enthusiasm, there is sometimes a tendency for this enthusiasm to Avear off, and it must be guarded against. It wilf be no use realising a week before Christmas that our boys are in the thick of it and we Avould like to give them good cheer. The time is now. We must give, and to what better fund than this one? This little homily perhaps comes ill as a prelude to a concert report, but the Medlians gaA r e a lead, and they must have felt great disappointment at the response. The programme presented Avas varied and entertaining, most of the items being on the lighter side, and therefore of more popular appeal. A simple but effective stage arrangement had been carried out by Mrs. Cameron Smith, with beautifully arranged bowls of pink camellias and arum lilies, and Mrs. M. P. Munro, President of the Medlians Club, made one or two formal announcements. : The programme as it was presented was as follows: Pianoforte duet, Hungarian Dance (Brahms), Mrs. L. A. James and Miss Clarice Ray; recitations, “My Little Garden” (Mai’ion St. John Webb) and “Lullaby of the Iroquois,” Audrey Kerridge; songs, “For the Green” and “Maori Lullaby,” Mrs. M. P.
