REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY

BAY OF PLENTY DEFEATED BY WAIKATO FAST FOOTBALL BEATS HOME DEFENCE WAIKATO 17, BAY 6. Fast forward play and the taking of opportunities when offered, were decisive factors in the victory of the Waikato over the Bay of Plenty in the representative match played on the Tauranga domain on Saturday. Conditions were ideal, although a troublesome wind was blowing in from the hoveling green end of the ground when the teams lined out before an attendance of approximately 1700. With one exception, R. Howell (Rangitaiki) for Lindeinan (Opotiki), the Buy team turned out as selected as follows: Skinner (Rotorua) Goosman (Te Puke), R. Lees (Rangitaiki), G. Mitchell (Whakatane) M. Lees (Rangitaiki), Moore (Opotiki) R. Howell (Rangitaiki) Bell (Tauranga), Matheson (Rotorua), Hughes (Whakatane), Ruebe (Te Puke), Rauwhero (Rotorua), Whiteley (Rangitaiki), Schooner (Rangitaiki), Tamahori (Rotorua). Waikato: J. Ensor A. Aitken, R. Everest, L. Reece R. Aherne, C. Perkins W. Brown J. Taylor, E. Catley, P. Farreu, W. Warrender, C. Satherley, A. McLean, A. Thompson and L. Daniel. Referee, Mr J. Wilson, Tauranga. Kicking off, the Bay faced the strong- breeze, and were (illicitly on the attack forming a scrum well into the Waikato territory. A penalty kick arising out of Waikato’s scrum infringement gave the home side an early opportunity to 1 take the lead. Skinner’s kick w r as hardly strongenough against the wind. Keepingup the attack, the Bay forwards showed a bustling style of play, and forced a further scrum. Infringing again, the Waikato gave a further opportunity to the Bay to go ahead, but Tamahori’s kick also fell short of the mark. Moore, R. Lees and M. Lees combined well in a good passing movement, but Ensor positioned to intercept the pass out to Goosman, and transferred play with an excellent kick into the Bay half. Following up this advantage, the Waikato forwards came into prominence, and a dangerous situation arose when Goosman cut in on Skinner to bustle the ball into touch. Keeping well down in the Bay half, the Waikato forwards found Skinner out of position for Taylor to open the scoring with a good try. Satherley’s kick glanced the upright and fell inside the posts. Waikato, 5; Bay of Plenty 0. Following a period of midfield play, Bell, supported by Tamahori, initiated .a good movement, but a forward pass spoiled any chance of making a score. After the Waikato had transferred play through Satherley and Daniels, a rule infringement kick by Goosman returned the ball into the visitors half to be followed with a strong forward attack. For the first time, the Bay back line came into action, Goosman making a brilliant run, but his pass inside to Lees, was dropped, and a good opportunity to open the scoring account was Tost, Revealing a speed superior to the home side, the Waikato back line came into action for Everest to increase the visitor’s lead. The kick by Reece converted.

Waikato, 10; Bay of Plenty, 0. . Following up the centre kick, the Bay attacked strongly, Waikato infringing in their, eagerness to clear. The third kick at goal also failed to raise the flags, Tamahori barely raising the ball. After a period when the home side rarely saw the ball against the bustling attack of the visitors, Moore opened out the game for the Bay for Mitchell to make a good'run to open the home side’s scoring account. Skinner’s kick only narrowly failed to convert.

Waikato, 10; Bay of Plenty 3. Keeping up the attack, Hughes and M. Lees combined well in a passing movement, Ensor, however, being sound in defence. Goosman again came into prominence with one of his speedy bursts for the line. The bounce of his short punt over Ensor’s head went the wrong way and what appeared to be a certain score was lost.

Half time: Waikato, 10; Bay of Plenty, 3. Although hardly up,to representative standard, play had been fast and lively, the absence of constructive passing movements, usually featured in such games, being particularly noticeable.

From the resumption of play, Waikato attacked strongly through their back line, Perkins being particularly prominent in several speedy dashes for the home stronghold. His persistence was finally rewarded from a scrum under the Bay posts. Satherley’s kick failed to find its objective. The Bay had rushed too soon, the kick being recalled. Satherley’s second attempt also failed.

Waikato, 13; Bay of Plenty, 3r The Lees brothers opened up a good passing movement, a scrum being forced close to the W T aikato twenty-five line. The visitors infringed again, but Skinner’s kick missed its mark. A spell of robust forward play necessitated dn T. Whitely, for the Bay, having to leave the field, his place being taken by Mitchell. The nippy Waikato first five-eighths, Perkins, again made a bold dash for the home line, Skinner coming to the rescue with a good tackle. A good run by Goosman returned the play into the Waikato half, and a further scrum infringement kick, taken this time by. M. Lees, failed to raise the flags. The Bay back line again attacked strongly, Goosman being prominent in a speedy dash for the line. Ensor brought him down info touch close to the corner flag.
