Stokowski Tries Electric ‘Players’

Leopold Stokowski is experimenting with an electrically equipped orchestra with which he hopes to achieve the effect of full symphonies with a handful of musicians.

"I have such an organization,” the former Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra said as he stopped at Philadelphia en route from Europe to Hollywood, “but it is in the process of evolution. lam not ready to announce anything definite. We hope to tour Europe.”

Paul Whiteman, in a visit there several months ago, said he believed Mr. Stokowski was being wooed from the conventional concert stage by “the , challenging possibilities of electrical . amplification.” Mr, Whiteman said experiments he had made with his own orchestra had proved the plan was feasible.“We’ve found that by placing one violin near a ‘mike’ and six saxo r phones In the background you can get the effect of a thousand strings.”
