MELBOURNE’S “PRESTIGE” CARNIVAL
Melbourne’s first Spring Carnival at the end of the year will retrieve for Melbourne the position of the premier city of the Commonwealth, according to the organiser, Mr. E. J. Gravestock. He outlined carnival activities to members of the Constitutional Club recently. ' Since Federal Parliament moved to Canberra, everything appeared to be gmng to New South Wales and Sydney, he said, Melbourne was slipping back, and its prestige diminishing. But the City Council, having agreed to the idea of Cr. J. S. Disney, decided to attempt to remedy the position with a spectacular carnival. Although the event had originally been conceived as a street procession and battle of flowers, it had now developed into, probably the most comprehensive programme of features ever organised by a municipality, apart from centenary and historical celebrations.
