THE MAORI DRIVER
Sir, —I notice that in Thursday’s ■“Tiroes” Air A. B. Allen takes roe to task. I did not exempt Europeans, I merely stated the only examples of insane driving 1 happened to have noticed. I do condemn all irresponsible driving.
However, the Maori population is about three or four per cent of the population, and I certainly think that the percentage of motor offences hy Maoris is well above three or four. I should estimate it at four or five times that figure and rapidly getting more serious. So I do not feel that an apology is called for. Like Mr Allen, I would prefer to sign my name, but I happen to live near a Maori settlement, and feel that discretion is the better part of valour. Therefore I must sign myself, “GALID.” p.S.—I must thank Mr Allen for his totally unsolicited testimonial as to my literary ability.
