A PAGE FROM THE PAST TAURANGA FIFTY YEARS AGO r* The following paragraphs are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of August 15, 1889: “The Mercury Bay footballers are likely to visit Tauranga on the 7th of September, and the local team will have to play better than they have been doing lately or they will suffer a defeat, as the Mercury Bay team is a strong one. The match was spoken of at the beginning of the season, but nothing could be arranged until the 7th of next month. It is hoped that the match will eventuate, as it is looked forward to with much interest.’’ “We respectfully call the County chairman’s attention to our telegraphic news in this issue from which he will observe that the chairman of Hobson County is calling a monster indignation meeting to protest spending pifblic money on a tramway, because engineers have reported that the cost of water carriage is a mere fraction of that of tramway and railway.’.’ “The Ringarooma is taking passengers from Auckland to Sydney for 10s, in consequence of competition with the Ellis line, which is getting two additional boats. So many went by the Ringarooma last trip that blankets had to be borrowed right and left.”
