Charlie McCarthy Visits World Fair
One day last month was Charlie McCarthy day at the New York World’s Fair, with the jokester receiving the applause of thousands of men, women and children.
Kings, queens, ambassadors, cabinet members, legislators, Governors, majors, and many other foreign and American leaders have been welcomed to the Exposition by the firing of 19 or 21 gun salutes, but a distinctive welcome was reserved for Charlie when he with his animator, Edgar Bergen, arrived at Boulevard Gate. Instead of the booming of cannon, 21 midgets were lined up, each with a giant firecracker, which they set off alternately as the guests of honour entered the Exposition grounds.
Mr, Bergen and Charlie were received by Grover A. Whalen, head of the Fair Corporation, and later conducted to the Standard Brands exhibit for a special performance, after which they made a tour of the Fair and Charlie judged a beauty contest.
