COUNTY WORKS

ENGINEER’S REPORT HIGHWAYS AND DISTRICT ROADS METALLING IMPROVEMENTS The following report of work done during the past month was presented by the County Engineer, Mr A. H, Benham, to Friday’s meeting of the Tauranga County Council: MAIN HIGHWAYS State Highway.—26o cubic yards of metal was carted from Athenree Quarry and spread on the highway as directed by the Public Works Department’s Overseer. Tauranga-Matamata Highway.—On the metalled section of this highway 249 cubic yards of maintenance metal was spread; the surface was graded, and other maintenance work was attended to.

Paengaroa-Te Nga© Highway.— This highway was graded, planed and general maintenance pumicing was carried out.

Maketu Highway.—This highway was graded and planed and repairs to the pumice surface were effected. Papamoa-Mount Maunganui Highway.—This highway was kept in shape with the planer and general maintenance work was attended to. Te Puna Point-Omokoroa Highway.—On this highway, 45 cubic yards of metal was spread and other general maintenance work was carried out. RIDINGS Katikati Riding Metal in the quantities stated was used for maintenance work on the following roads; —Tuapiro, 33 cubic yards; Kauri Point, 16; Woodlands, 78; Lindemann’s, 66; Hall, 3; Beach, 9; Park, 14; Thompson’s Track, 3; and Rea’s, 3. Thirty feet of culvert pipes were installed on Woodland’s Road. Clearing of watertables and other general -maintenance work was carried, out on the above roads and on Wharawhara, . Henry’s and Lindeman’s roads. ' The No. 4 grader has been doing formation work on roads on Matakana Island. Te Puna Riding Metal was carted and spread on the following roads: —Youngson’s, 39 cubic yards; Esdaile’s, 3; Wainui South, 3; Leyland’s, 48; Young’s, 18; Te Puna, 12; and Lochhead’s Road, 15. • ' v General surface maintenance work was attended to throughout the Riding. Waimapu Riding Metal was spread on the following roads in the quantities mentioned: Carmichael’s, 2 cubic yards; Omanawa, 309; Joyce’s, 2; Oropi, 235; Warner’s, 67; and McPhail’s,, 114. Joyce’s Road, Omanawa Road and Peer’s Road were graded. A start has been made with the preparation for sealing of a section of the Otumoetai Road, the surface of which has been realigned and graded into shape, and up to the end of the month 123 cubic yards of metal had been spread. The necessary chips for sealing have been ordered and a start has been made by the contractor to supply these. The stone crusher, electric motor, friction winch and other gear formerly at Ruahihi Quarry have been overhauled and are being, in-, stalled at the Oropi Quarry. A start has been made with the metalling of Peer's Road under Government subsidy and during the' month 21 chains were completed with 234 cubic yards of metal. Te Puke Riding The following work was done under Government subsidy: A further 164 cubic yards of metal was spread on Ohauiti-Waimapu Road; 424 cubic yards on No. % Road. Approaches, wing-walls and handrails of Manoeka Culvert were completed. Maintenance metal was spread as follows: — Maungatapu Road, 14 cubic yards; Papamoa Beach Road, 14 - Quarry, 2J; Manoeka Road, 10, Bartons'. 22; No. 1,12; and No. 3, 9. _ .

"* The Otaimatua, Airport, Te Puk© Quarry and No. 3 Roads were planed and' general maintenance work was carried out on Ohauiti, Waitao, Abbot’s. No. 1 and No. 2 Roads. A gang has been engaged clearing the Maungatawa Drain. Maketu Biding

The following work was done under Government subsidy:- I —2o cubic yards of metal spread on Rangiuru Pa Road. Approaches to both the Wharere Bridge and Mangatoefcoe( Culvert were completed. , Ninety-seven cubic yards of metal was spread on the T© Matai Road. Nine cubic yards of metal wer©_used for patching on the Rangiuru Road Pumice from the pit near Waihi Beach was spread on to the MaketuPaengaroa. Road, 212 cubic Ford’s Road, 27; and Kaituna Road,' 12 Maintenance pumioing was also carried out on the Old Coach Road. The following roads were during the month: Old Coach, Conway’s, Black’s, Roydon Downs, Maniatutu, Maungarangi. PaengaroaMak6tu Waihi Beach, Arawa Avenue, Maketu Beach, Kaituna, Ford s Kelly’s Young’s, Te Tumu, Rangiuru Pa, Kaikokopu and Tainui. The following roads were planed during the month; Te Matai, Paen-garoa-Maketu, Maungarangi. Kaikokopu, Wairangi, Old Coach, Black's, Pongakawa School, Pongakawa Station, Benner’s Pukehma .Rpto-ehu, Otamarakau Valley and Campbell’s. , _ . In reply to Cr Hume, Mr Benham said that about twelve miles of roads would be formed at Matakana Island. These roads were -through the pinus plantations. About eigtu miles had been done. Mr ’Benham reported that a cut had been put through the Fapaimoa i Beach Road, by a settler, and scourI iug had resulted. A bridge would be required. Details of the structure were given. Cr Evans said that two culverts

had been taken away some years ago. A cut that had been put in re- , cently had prevented the flooding of the Mangatawa Drain. He would like to see a bridge 1 erected, and It was the only solution* Cr Spratt moved —[That the matter be referred to Cr Evans, the Engineer and the mover, with power to act. —Seconded by Cr Hume and carried. Cr Mundt referred to a bridge on Allport’s Road. The matter was referred to the Engineer. Cr Mundt asked that some repairs be 'effected to the Paengaroa-Maketu Road. Cr Evans said metal was required on parts of the Papamoa Beach Road. The Waltao Road also needed attention. The matters were referred to the Engineer. Cr Gunton said a pumice pit on Mr Attingwell’s property t should be fenced. Mr Benham explained the position, and the matter was left in his hands. Cr Gunton asked for attention to a culvert on a road leading to the Pongakawa flaxmill. The matter was referred to the Engineer. * .
