ROAD INTERSECTIONS
SPECIAL REPORT BARRICADES FOR PROTECTION ATTENTION TO BE GIVEN The following special report by Mr A. H. Benham, county engineer, was presented to Friday’s meeting of the Tauranga County Council: As instructed, an inspection was made, in company with the Assistant Engineer, Public Works Department, of the State Highway, in regard to the improvement of road intersections, and also to the places which are a danger or inconvenience to the driving of stock.
It was agreed that the following intersections should receive attention: Woodlands Road, Turner’s Road, Esdaile’s Road, Whakamarama Road, Bethlehem Road, Cambridge Road, Rocky Cutting Road, Paparaoa-Mount Highway, Abbotts’ Road, Old Coach Road, and Otamarakau Valley Road.
There are twelve places at which it was agreed that, by the erection of barricades, etc., the highway would be made safer for the droving of stock. The cost of these barricades., etc., is estimated to be in the vicinity of £1 each, and in view of this I am of the opinion that these improvements could be made by the Department’s own surfacemen, and without any monetary contribution by this Council. In respect to the intersections, the Otamarakau Valley, Old Coach and Papamoa-Mount Junctions, I am of the opinion that the State Highway should bear the whole cost, but regarding the remainder, proposals will be prepared, and subsidies requested on the basis of the Main Highway Board’s circular, 1938/27. The report was adopted.
