INCREASING COST The continued increase of New Zealand’s pensions bill under tlie social security legislation is evident from figures published in the Abstract of Statistics for July. Age benefits were paid to 81,943 persons in June, compared with 76,503 in May, an increase of 5440. The' amount paid rose by £ 28,405 — from £ 485,976 to £514,381. In June of last year, 56,224 persons received £ 286,885. The rise in the monthly payment over 12 months is 79 per cent. Figures under other headings are: Widows. —June, 8523, £ 67,705; May, 7268, £ 58,289; increases, 1255, £9416. June last year, 5012, £ 39,536. Invalidity.—June 10,609, £75,589; May, 10,122, £ 74,376; increases, 487, £1213 June last year, 11,132, £ 58,224. Family.—June, 7803, £ 18,495; May, 6677 £16,724; increases, 1126, £1771. June last year, 6481, £ 6936. Unemployment benefits in force in June ’ numbered 703 6. compared with 5565 in May, and the respective amounts paid were £ 52,342 (five, weeks) and £ 31,825 (four weeks). Equivalent figures for sickness benefits are 1519 and 1201, costing £ 16,325 and £ 7624 respectively.
