THREE POINTS MARGIN IN TIGHT MATCH

CURTAIN-RAISER TO TAURANGA

Two well-matched teams represented the Tauranga and Te Fuke Rugby Unions in a keen match for the Parata Cup played at Te Puke on Saturday afternoon in pleasant weather Victory went to Te Puke after a hard fought game by nine points to six, and the spectators thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition, which in the main was a trial of strength between the forwards, with occasional brilliant flashes by the backs ■ There was a large attendance, which included many enthusiasts from Tauranga. The following were the teams: Tauranga.— Full-back, W. Castaing; three-quarters, J. Bidois, M. Tangitu, F. Voice; five-eighths, H. .Rayment, S. Short; half-back, J. Kuka; forwards, R. Rolleston, J. Horrocks, J. Tamahori, M. Bell, P. Murray, W. Clay, J. McNeile (captain), T. Kakau. . Te Puke; —Full-back, J. Bennett; three-quarters, N. Richmond, E. Donovan (captain), J. Graham; fiveeighths, R. Valder, Ahomiro; halfback, Wilkinson; forwards, Johnson, Lennard, Kingi, C. Satherly, Hughes, Barker, Phillips and Nicholson. The toss favoured McNeile who defended the northern goal. , From loose play the Tauranga forwards rucked through and crossed over. Bell scoring. After resuming the home forwards replied and a penalty kick by Satherly was badly cleared by the visitors. ; A minute later another penalty gave Satherly his second opportunity, the effort being very creditable. McNeile broke through from a scrum and Voice centred nicely, but Richmond cleared skilfully from in front of his own goal. Tauranga pressed but Phillips saved by very determined play and Graham improved with'similar-tactics. -McNeile secured from close play and made a splendid opening. He passed to Tangitu who sent back • to McNeile, who crossed over but was called back. Wilkinson set the Te Puke backs going and a splendid movement was finished off by Nicholson scoring. Satherly’s kick, swervted, and the scores now stood three all. Tamahori made a splendid opening and Horrocks, Murray and Clay joined issue. The Visiting backs then had a turn and Voice made a strong run to be thrown out in the south-, western angle. Tauranga pressed and a nippy kick by Bennett stemmed the forwards. Tauranga pressed until one of their backs was caught offside and Ahomiro gained sixty, yards from the resultant, kick. The Te Puke fprwards and backs, then de-i liverfed a great team attack, and. the ! Tauranga line was seriously - threat- j ened until McNeile cleared The home forwards worked, down the eastern side. Then, Bennett was injured through colliding with, a visi,ting player, and was ..carried off. Oxenham going on in his place. Upon resuming Murray, Clay and Bell were prominent and took play to the Te Puke ' twenty-five; Satherly and Hughes came through but Castaing fielded and found touch in the home territory. Tauranga pressed but Te Puke countered by- close play and Graham further improved, with a strong run, heating half-a-dozen opponents. McNeile replied in a solo effort and kicked through but Donovan saved by forcing. The visitors attacked and Castaing made a good attempt to goal from forty yards. Richmond collided with an opposing player and was hurt but was able to resume in, a few minutes. The. Tauranga forwards worked into a good position, but failed to hold the ad-i vantage and Graham and Satherly turned the tables, transferring activities to the Tauranga end. The home vanguard pressed until Castaing cleared with a high kick. Smart play by Tangitu and Voice carried the ball to the Te Puke end, A determined run by Graham enabled Te Puke to clear and Satherly smothered the Tauranga return. The visiting backs | failed to extricate their side from a tight corner and Lennard scored from a scramble. The kick failed; Te Puke, 6; Tauranga, 3. The play was fairly even in the second half. Then Te Puke attacked and Tauranga were able to clear by means of close work by the forwards. A high kick by Castaing placed the visitors in a good postion. After even play the Te Puke forwards rucked through quickly and Satherly landed a penalty goal from quarter-way: Te Puke, 9; Tauranga, 6. The advantage remained for a period with Te Puke. Satherly handled from a line-out and kicked through smartly ,with the Te Puke forwards in hot pursuit, but Rayment forced. The next feature was a strong run by Tangitu and the visiting forwards attacked sharply. Te Puke infringed and Rayment had an unsuccessful shot at goal from quarter-way. The Tauranga forwards were now hooking splendidly and the backs showed out attractive-

ly, but three times in quick succession Taxxgitu was thrown out in the Te Puke twenty-five. Taux-auga ati tacked strongly and Donovan checked by marking. Tauranga held on in the twenty-five and a free kick enabled Ahomiro to clear. Castaing fielded and sent the ball out in Te Puke territory. From the throw-in the visiting forwards crossed, jmt Wilkinson was too quick and forced. The Te Puke forwards worked steadily down the eastern line and Satherly had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Smart, play by McNeile saw the Te Puke line threatened. Kakau came up rapidly and- was tackled right on the line. Te Puke tightened the play and the forwards broke clear. Valder fielded brilliantly and then sent to Donovan who made the finest run of the day to be thrown out by Short in the southeastern corner. Te Puke were now in a striking position and for some minutes there was keen line play and scrums in the corner. Matters looked serious for Tauranga until Kakau cleared to half-way. The visiting forwards backed up well. Short sent up a high ball but Tauranga lost an excellent scoring opportunity through faulty handling. Te Puke were penalised and McNeile had a shot at goal, Tamahofi followed up i*apidly but was just beaten for the ball by. an opposing back. A little later Tauranga was penalised. The ball was well fielded and then sent to Taxxgitu, who after a fine run handed to Tamahoxd who was stopped right on the line. The Te Puke forwards fox'ced the pace in the concluding stages and were in the visitors’ terxdtory when time was souxxded, with the scores 9 to 6 in Te Puke’s favour. Mr A. Spratt was referee. Tauranga Wins Curtain Raiser The cui'taixx raiser to the Cup game between Tauranga axxd Te Puke B teams was very even and was won ixx the last minute by Tauranga. The teams were: Tauranga—r-W. Gumbley, Barnes and Rixdnui participated in a handling bout, Bax-nes being thrown out inside the Te Puke twenty-five. Tauranga pressed and eventually Lilias cleared with a long range kick off a penalty. The Te Puke vanguax'd tightened the play and Williams improved with a well-placed ball to touch. Borrie and Hayward followed the- ball across, but Castaing saved by forcing., Upon resuming Tauranga worked back and Dixon ran through to be brought down by McClure. Oxenham then secured and sprinted down the eastern line? He was checked and Tapseil and Borrie followed up rapidly and dribbled across, but B. Smith saved by forcing as a Te Puke man dropped to touch down. From -a scrum in Te Puke territory Dixon whipped the ball out to M. Murray, who cut in and sent to Gardiner, who was checked befbre he could get going. Lilias then secured and made thirty yards with a fine kick. The Te Puke forwards worked down field and were steadied by a line-kick by Gumbley. Tauranga infringed and Lilias’ kick from thirty yards went close. Shortly after the opening of the second half Kingi secured and made a strong run down the western flank, to be thrown out near the visitors’ line. The Te Puke vanguard pressed. A couple of Tauranga forwards ran offside, Lilias’ kick from thirty yards swerving with the wind. After slow play Tauranga livened up and penetrated the home quarter, McClure foiling with a neat kick to touch. When the ball came in the Te Puke backs handled attractively and were stopped deep in the Taui'anga twenty-five. The visitors cleared and made their way to the Te Puke quarter. Then a Tau- f ranga forward picked up in the loose and ran through to be brought down by McClure, Lilias clearing with a high kick. A little later M. Murray made a strong run on the eastern side and Barnes came up fast but a touch-in-goal was the result. Tauranga kept the play in the home quarter and just on time J. Ririnui landed a goal from thirty yards to give Tauranga the verdict by three points to nil. Mr E. Morton was referee. .. ■
