ACCLIMATIZATION SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING MR H. CUFF RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT The annual meeting of the Taurauga Acclimatization Society was this year hold in Te ?uke and an attendance of twenty members was presided over by Mr H. Cuff. The annual report revealed that the prospects for the coming season are better than they have been for years. There qre big stocks of birds and the young birds are strong and well grown. . : Last year, 375 pheasants were liberated and in the last eleven years the total has been 3043 pheasants. It was reported that the- policy of introducing fresh blood was having a good effect on the quality of rearing within the district; Birds last year came from Christchurch, Auckland, Rotorua, Opotiki, Whakatane, Te Puke and Tauranga. , Last season letters w.ere.sent to. all license holders requesting reports of birds shot in seaon, blit of 326 licenes issued only 146 replies were received showing a * bag of 23 8£ pheasants, 1530 duck, 1249 quail, 359 pukeko, and 42 swan. This gave an average of 38 birds a gun. ; The Council had received some very encouraging reports as to- the sport obtained in the streams around Tauranga this year, both as regards the number and size and condition. The number of fry liberated in .the streams was 55,000. . In answer to certain license holders .'that more money might have, spent ' on trout stocking, the - pointed out that in the last 12 ; ,years, £177 more was spent than was received from fishing fees. This year, 100,000 brown trout ova had, been ordered from Greymouth and these would -be hatched by the Auckland .Society. An increase in the native birds was reported and kiwis had been seen near Tauranga recently. The possibility of ' the . Tauranga Acclimatization Society being v absorbed by the Department of ■ Internal Affairs was discussed, as also were proposals for •amalgamation’ as a sub-society of Auckland.
