MISSING AIRMEN
FLYING-BOAT CALIFORNIA CRASHES MAIL FOR NEW ZEALAND Bagdad, Now. 29. No trace has yet been found of Captain E. H. Attwood, First-Officer A. N. Spottiswoode and Flight Clerk F. G. Übee, of the Empire flying boat Calpurnia, which crashed while making a forced landing on Lake Ramadi yesterday. It is feared that the bodies of the three men are under the wreckage. Of the other members of the crew, Radio Officer B. B. Rees was killed and Steward D. E. Anderson and Probationary Station Officer Harrison were injured. Members of the Royal Air Force are trying to salvage the letters from the burst mail bags. The mail included 65 bags for Australia and 69 bags for New Zealand. Some of the letters addressed to New Zealand have been found floating in -the lake, but it is not likely that all of the mail will be recovered. Captain Attwood, who was aged 39, was making his last trip after 12 years’ service,. and was due to begin work as Deputy-Director of Civil Aviation in India.
