BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING a Correspondent) At the Borough Council meeting held in the Council Chambers last evening, the Mayor, Mr Ben Keys, presided and Crs. E. Brown, A. Jamieson, E. V. Sharp, P. Ryan and W. Pilcher were present. An apology for absence was received from Cr. J. Eccleton. The minutes of the meetings held on May 16 and 19 were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read ami approved. Washer’s Bridge.—* The County Engineer intimated that with a newtype of foundation, the estimated cost of a new bridge abutting the legal road would be £IOO. Mr Washer, who was present at the meeting, said he was agreeable to provide up to £3O towards the cost, and the County’s proposal that the bridge be built was adopted, Mr Washer to provide the additional timber, the Te Puke Borough Council the piers for reinforcement, and the Tauranga County Council the labour. Works Committee Recommendations.—lt was decided that the necessary pruning of trees in Main Street plots be done and that the Main Street be cleaned twicq weekly from now on, the days for cleaning’ being Mondays and Fridays. Jubilee Park.—The Council placed on record their appreciation of the assistance given by Mr C. 11. Burnett at all times in various matters, particularly in the issue of the ground improvement scheme in Jubilee Park. The Council had been notified that work by the Public Works Department on Jubilee Park was to be commenced in a week and wholly at the expense of the Government. Street Improvement Scheme.—The Works Commilte’s recommendation that a qualified engineer be retained to lay out a street improvement scheme at a minimum fee of £SO, and a maximum of £IOO, was carried. In this connection the Mayor, Mr Ben Keys, intimated that Te Puke would be greatly assisted by the new Government scheme for the utilisation of the unemployed which provided for a 40-hour week on' standard rales of pay. and applied to toad work. The scheme was to oper-' ate for the next four months approximately, and the Council would only have to pay for supervision and additional material and plant.
