BOROUGH COUNCIL il'rom unr i.'urrcspundeut) The Mayor, Mr Ben Keys, presided at the Borough Council meeting last evening when Crs W. Gray, G. Sweetman, J. Peisey, A. Jamieson, and F. Palmer attended. Cr £. Sharp was granted leave of absence. The minutes of the adjourned meeting of the 15th November were read by the Clerk and confirmed by the councillors. The outward correspondence was read and approved.

Jubilee Park.—Cr A. Jamieson reported on Cr Gray’y and his conference with the District Engineer of the Public Works on the question of the levelling of the oval in Jubilee Park. A full-sized football ground will now 7 be considered and the work on the proposed banked cycle track to be formed on the outside will he eliminated in the meanwhile. The action of the two councillors received the approval of the Council.

Swimming Baths.—Cr F. Palmer considered that the repair work to the baths would last a week and as it was deemed necessary that the baths be kept open during the present hot spell of weather and that the repair work was not of a serious nature, it was decided that no further action be taken until the close of the present swimming season unless an immediate urgency arose. Removal of Monument.—The Mayor informed the Council that the natives immediately concerned had given consent to the removal of the monument further into the town provided the edifice was undamaged in transit and that it was not taken further than a stipulated distance. This information will be now forwarded to tlie Public Works Department.

Cemetery.—The Mayor said that the control of the cemetery was not in the hands of the. Council. A list of suitable appointees had been forwarded to the Tauranga County Council and the Clerk of that body in a letter said he would bring the matter of the appointing of fresh trustees before hi s council at next meeting. Standardisation of Local Body ByLaws.—The Council approved of the principle or such a standardisation.

Girl Guides. — Permission® was granted the Girl Guide officials to light the signal bon-fire as part of a ceremonial function in connection with the Coronation.

Overhead Bridge in Jocelyn St. — The repair work to the decking of the overhead bridge in Jocelyn Street was left in the hands of the Works Committee with power to act. Pictures on Christmas Night.—Mr N. Grains, picture proprietor, was granted permission to screen a picture on Christmas night. TWENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY

The Otamarakau Hall was gaily decorated and festooned the other evening when Mr and Mrs W. J. Law entertained their son Graham’s friends at a party on the occasion of his 21st birthday. A portion of the hall had been screened off as a supper room and eighty guests were served. The party were fortunate in having the services of such accomplished pianists as Mrs C. Riddell and Mr D. Campbell and dancing filled in a big portion of the evening. Two anujsing and clever competitions were held, the sports dance being won by Miss Smith and Mr J. Ansell (Matata), and the hat competition bv Mr and Mrs Gibbons (Pongakawa). Miss M. Mortensen obliged with a tap dancing exhibition and Mr B. Freeman with a cornet solo, both being encored. Mr D. Corrigan also entertained with tricks.

On behalf of the many guests, Mr G. Shearer congratulated Graham on attaining his majority and thanked Mr and Mrs G. Law for inviting the guests to share the birthday party. Mr G. Law suitably responded. .
