“SACK CROONERS”
j YOUTH AND THE B.H.C. The 8.8. C. made radio history when it held its first youth conference ! in Broadcasting House, Edinburgh. | Two hundred boys and girls between the ages of 14 and -18 offered their views on current broadcasting features. The demand generally was for the more serious subjects, including politics, literature, art, drama, and Scottish music. A girl’s suggestion, which was warmly approved' by others, was to dismiss so-called crooners and bring organists more into the programme. A lad from Islay was warm in his i praise of Gaelic programmes, remarking that (here were old people on his island who could not understand English. , Another speaker declared “let Gaci lie die. It is dead. Abolish it com- ! pictcly. Gaelic broadcasts arc to satisfy the whim of a negligible minority of listeners.” During Die afternoon, two girls and a boy took turns as chairman.
