MUNICIPAL BAND

annual meeting review OF PAST YEAR’S ACTIVITIES election of officers There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Tauranga Municipal Band, held in the Borough Council Chambers last night. In addition to members of the Band those present included Mr C. H. Burnett, M.P., the Hon. B. C. Robbins. M.L.C., Messrs A. N. lies tDe-puty-Mayor), P. T. Keam, J. Law, C. Turner and W. Vowless, and Mesdames Bougen and Adler. Mr Law presided and said he was pleased to see Mr Burnett and the Hon. Mr Robbins present. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, Mr L. R. Wilkinson, and Messrs W. McKinnon, p. Bougen and .1. C. Ford. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. Annual .Meeting. The Secretary, Mr T. Milne, read the annual report as follows:

“During the winter only two concerts were held in the Town Hall. The first, on account of bad weather, was not a financial success, but the other, held at the end of the winter, proved quite good, and we are of opinion that this is the best method of appearing before the public during the winter and would suggest that If suitable assisting talent is available that concerts be held at regular intervals during the coming winter. We are still handicapped for want of suitable places for open air performances, the rotunda in the Domain having proved out-of-date and not attractive to the public. We have tried playing in the Monmouth Redoubt and although an ideal spot the Baud is not able to do justice to themselves, playing on the grass. We played several times on the new jetty, and. attracted good audiences, but here also weather conditions must be ideal and the lighting is not good enough. We are still of opinion that the ideal place for a rotunda is on the glass plot on the waterfront and are still living in hopes of having one erected there.

"Your delegate to tne Soutli Auckland Brass Bands Union, after trying for three years, was successful in having Tauranga as the venue of the last Band Contest. The Band Contest Committee which carried on the work are to be complimented on the manner in which the Contest was conducted and our best thanks are due to them, especially Mr A. N. lies and Mr A. J. Gallagher, who did the lion’s share of the work. At the Contest our Band was successful in wining the Own Choice Hymn and was second in the Quickstep, and the result of their hard practices should be very gratifying to them. Master N, Jones was second in the Boys’ Solo. Master N. Freeman and Mr J. G. Ford also competed in the solos with credit. At the conclusion of the Contest a presention was made to our Conductor on his departure for Wanganui. Mr Patterson’s record while in charge of the Band was two firsts in the Selection, first and second in the Hymn, and second in the Quickstep—a record we should be proud of. The appointment of a new conductor has been left to the Incoming Committee.

“You will see by the balance-sheet that the financial position is satisfactory. "During the year the Executive Committee met regularly once a month, but the attendance was disappointing on several occasions. We nope those elected for next term will endeavour to attend regularly. “The equipment of the Band is in first-class order. The uniforms were re-bralded. The instruments are all in good repair and the stock of music is in good order. "In conclusion, we wish to thank the Borough Council, tor their continued support and each year seems to bring us in closer touch with them. The Bay of Plenty Times has always assisted us in publishing our doings and we extend our thanks to them. To Mr W. G. Lovie, of Te Aroha, who acted as Drum-Major, and also everyone who assisted in anyway we also extend our thanks.” The balance sheet for the year 'ended March 31, 1937, was read and disclosed a credit balance of £ 55 7s 3d, with outstanding liabilities amounting to £ls 3s 2d. The Hon. Mr Robbins moved —• That the report and balance sheet be adopted.—ln doing so he said the position was very satisfactory.
