HOSPITAL LEVIES

SOUTHLAND INCREASES Increased levies will be made on the ratepayers of the Southland Hospital Board’s district for the current financial year in terms of estimates adopted at the board’s meeting (says an Invercargill message). It was stated, however, that in the past hospital rates in the Southland district had been substantially lower than the average for New Zealand, and the maintenance levy this year had been increased only to last yetjr’s average, which was to be expected in the year of the opening of a new hospital. The estimated maintenance expenditure for the year is £ 64,000, compared with £ 54,000 last year. The total levy on the district will be ,336 d in the pound, compared with .252 din the pound last year, an increase of one-third. The rate is expected to produce £ 29,716 compared with £ 22,021 last year.
