TE PUKE NOTES

FOOTBALL (From our Correspondent). The season was unofficially openlast Saturday, when the United junior team from Morrinsvillc played Paengaroa (Tc Puke) in a match which took place on Jubilee Park. The visitors arrived just before midday and the game was commenced -it 2.30 p.m. The weather was lino but (lull and overcast during the progress of Hie game, the ground being slow. The teams were: UNITED (yellow and black). —J. Woods, K. Drabble, A. Prince, Haycock, B. Morwood, a. Gales, Kelly, Wibby, Martinson, Findlay, J, Annear, Williams, Wakeiield, Smith, G. Drabble. PAENGAROA (black). — 0. Conway, J. McClure, S. Steele, C. Streatr, (1, "McClure, R. Henderson, G. Williams (captain), E. Blaekmore, 11. Mohr, 0. King!, E. Pinker, A. Gordon, A. Rhube, W. Fountain, J, Trealor. Paegaroa defended Hie railway end and Morrinsville kicked off against the wind. Both packs of forwards played fast and willing football and play fluctuated from end to end, Paengaroa having the better of the earlier exchanges. At this stage, Paengaroa were awarded a -penalty and Henderson’s, kick, from a long range, was a good effort. Morrinsville had their turn on attack but Gates, on receiving the Ball from Kelly, chose to cut in and was pulled down short of the line. Henderson was conspicuous in defence. Williams relieved the siege by a jinky run downiield and commenced a combined movement which transferred play to the Morrinsville 25. Henderson Just failed to raise the flags with a penalty .kick. Paengaroa, assisted by the wind, showed more initiative and gaining possession from a serum, Williams, Henderson, McClure and Steele were seen in a pasing rush which ended when Steele was snowed under 'by defenders. Morrinsville were obliged To force down several times during this period. Paengaroa scored first when a movement started by J, Conway, who field’ed a clearing kick, resul'ter in Streatr on, the wing centreing to waiting forwards, for Trealor to pick up and fling himself over the line near the posts. Henderson missed an easy kick: Paengaroa 3, United ■O. Paengaroa continued in the ascendancy and Streatr brought supporters to their toes when he anticipated a clearing kick and ran strongly down the side-line. H. Mohr hooked from the next scrum but Henderson was well and truly bottled when he cut into forwards. A free kick "being awarded Paengaroa, Henderson kicked a very nice goal: Paengaroa (j, United 0. Play settled in the mid-field for a while and then the Morrinsville forwards, in a fine dribbling rush, carried play to the Paengaroa 25, where A. Gates kicked a penalty goal; Paengaroa 6, United 3.

Shortly afterwards United were awarded a penalty within easy range but failed to gain the points. Half-time: Paengaroa 6, United 3. Doubts were held during the spell as to whether Paengaroa had a sufficient lead, now they were to face the wind in the second spell. The commencement of the second half proved to be the brightest and liveliest portion of the match. United wore' livening up their play considerably now and gained possession from scrums and line-outs. The visitors were unlucky at this stage as a penalty goal and a ‘pot’ went perilously close to their objectives. However their efforts were rewarded when a forward dived over from a melee on the Paengaroa line. Gates missed the kick. Paengaroa G, United 6. Streatr scored Paengaroa’s next points when he crowned a 'brilliant solo run hy scoring in the corner just as a host of defenders were converging on him. The kick missed. Paengaroa 9, United G. United returned to the attack and from a scrum underneath the Paengaroa goal posts, Kelly passed to Gates (on the blind side) who crossed the line as McClure flung himself at him. The kick was successful. United 11, Paengaroa 9. The Blacks tried valiantly to fcore on continuing, but United were finishing better and a certain try was lost when Gates, instead of feeding his outsides, cut in. The giime ended shortly afterwards with no further score. Mr C. Montgomery was referee.
