DIVORCE INCREASING
ARREARS PILING UP IN 'ENGLAND
B.l’. Times” Special Service.—iiy Air .Man London, March 20
There ’is grave concern in legal circles'at the steady increase in the number of divorce cases set down for hearing daily. Petitions are being entered in greater numbers than are being tried and the appointment of one or two extra judges for divorce work alone is being advocated.
The Lord Chief Justice and Mr Justice Swift have recently emphasised the need for reform in the present system of dealing with divorce, and on all sides it is agreed that the machine must be speeded up to get to grips with the overburdened list and the tragedy of delay to many litigants. With arrears from previous terms the current sittings opened with 1.5-17 cases. Now. with only a week of the sittings to go, nearly 1.000 remain to be dealt with—and hundreds of petitions are being added each week. One reason for the increase in divorce is that more poor people are taking advantage of the facilities provided.
