BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING AMALGAMATION SCHEME LIGHTING OF MUNICIPAL BATHS The ordinary meeting of the Taurangu Borough Council, held last night, was attended by His Worship the Mayor, Mr L. R. Wilkinson (in the chair), Crs F. J. Allely, J. M. Dailies, A. W. Every, AV. McKinnon, T. E. Youngman, D. Matheson, G. T. •McFarlane and A. N. lies. St. vlolm Ambulance Mr L. Warde, Hon. Secretary of the Bay of Plenty Branch of the St. John Ambulance Association in thanking the Council for permission to hold the annual street collection on the 27th. inst., pointed out that that date would not be suitable, as it was Katikati Show Day. The Council was asked to give its permission to hold a collection on April 24. The Council agreed to grant the date provided it does not clash with an effort to be made by the Western Bay of Plenty Returned Soldiers’ Association. Petrol Stations The Chief Inspector of Explosives, Wellington, wrote advising that fourteen petrol stations at Tauranga had been visited by Mr Barringer, and the conditions of storage were found to he satisfactory. Municipal Baths Miss M. Bates, Hon. Secretary of the Tauranga Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club, wrote asking that extra lights he provided at the municipal baths, also that minor repairs be effected. The Mayor moved —That the matter lie referred to the Endowments Committee, with power to act.—Seconded by Cr McKinnon and carried. Stacking of Timber Messrs Sharp, Tudhope and Auld, wrote stating that the solicitors for the Existing Forests Timber Milling Co,, Ltd. advised that the property that was leased from the Tauranga Co-operative Dairy Association Ltd. would be used for the stacking of sawn timber from the Company’s mill at Oropi. The matter was referred to the Town Planning Committee to report upon. Warrants of Fitness The Acting Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, forwarded circular relative to warrants of fitness of motor vehicles. The circular was referred to the Engineer’s department. Camping: Grounds The Medical Officer of Health, Auckland, forwarded a copy of the camping ground regulations. He said he would be pleased if the Council would make application to have Us district gazetted for the purpose of the regulations. The matter was referred to the Parks Committee. Portraits of The King Messrs Bassano Ltd., Court Photographers, London, wrote quoting prices for portraits of His Majesty King George VI, which were suitable as souvenirs for school children. The communication was referred to the Tauranga District High School Committee. Town Hall Bents The Deputy Controller and Audi-tor-General in reply to a letter, advised that the action taken by the Council in regard to the granting of free use of the Town Hall met the requirements of the Audit Office. — Received. 1 mproving Frontages Mr A. Broward wrote asking that the street frontage of his properly in Seventh Avenue be levelled so that he could sow it in lawn grass seed. The request was referred to the AVorks Committee with power to act. Messrs E. P. Blanchard, R. T. Brightwell and A. F. Gosden, and Mrs A. Ford, in a joint communication, asked that steps be taken to improve the frontages to their properties on Cameron Road. They suggested that individual entrances the upper level on the embankment be sown in lawn grass which they would keep In order. 'The request was referred to the AVorks Committee for a report. Mr P. Purse, Roberts Street, wrote reminding the Council that it had not yet completed the levelling of the street frontage to his property. The matter was referred to the AVorks Committee for attention. Briarley Subdivision Mr P. J. Western.in a letter regarding the Briarley subdivision, referred to the Council's resolution that provision would be made in next year’s estimates for the formation of the road. Three houses are in course of erection. He had cleaned up the whole property and asked the Council to commence cleaning up the road frontages preparatory to the main work of permanent formation of footpaths and road. The grass on tha roadside was in urgent need of cutting. Cr McKinnon moved —That the matter be referred to the Works Committee. —Seconded by Cr Allely and carried. Plans of Subdivisions Mr R. T. Goulding wrote asking that the seal be affixed to subdivision be cut through the present embankment to Cameron Road level, and also metalled. They requested that plan of Mrs Tutchen’s property in Eleventh Avenue, as already approved by the Council. It was agreed that the plan be sealed and signed, also, similarly another plan of a subdivision in Spring and Willow Streets, as approved at a meeting on December 21. . Kdgcninbe Road The Mayor moved —That the Council undertake the improvement of frontages in Edgcumhe Road, between Roberts and Morris Streets, and that the matter he treated as urgent.—Seconded by Cr Matheson and carried. Amalgamation. Scheme The minutes were read of the meeting held on the 10th inst. in regard to the Local Government (Amalgamation Schemes) Bill, at which the Borough Council and Harbour Board were represented. - Cr Dailies moved —That the report he adopted and that the Mayor, De-puty-Mayor and Cr Youngman he appointed as the Council's representatives to confer with the Harbour Board’s delegates on the matter. The motion was seconded by Cr Matheson and carried. Mr J. K. Lusk, Hon. Secretary of the Domain Board, in a letter, dated February 2. regarding Local Government (Amalgamation Schemes) Bill stated: “I have to thank you for your letter of the 2Sth. ultimo, enclosing letter of the 23rd. ultimo, which had gone astray. Unfortunately my Board met on the 2(ith ultimo and it is not likely to meet again for some weeks. My Board was expecting a deputation from your Council, at the meeting before Christmas, verbal advice having been received from His AA’oiship the Mayor that such a deputation was to wait on the Board, but the meeting did not eventuate. 1 take it from your letter, that it is a meeting of the whole Council with the Board which is suggested, and not sub-committees. I would therefore, suggest that you name a dale for the meeting, say, at 7.30 on any evening except Thursday, and X will call a special meeting of the Board.” It was agreed that the Council advise the Domain.. Board that it will meet it to consid'er the question, the date to be arranged by the Mayor and the Town Clerk.
