THE DOGS

Sir.—Your correspondent “Pride" suggests that the “Borough Council has realised the importance of beautifying the waterfront,” and that any citizen who dares to suggest a clean town is guilty of a petty spirit. May I in reply say that the gardens in Herries Park are just as great a pleasure to me as to anyone else, but Tauranga at present may be compared to the small boy with a very shiny face, who fails to wash his neck. Beauty is only skin deep, and a little more attention to the cleanliness of the streets and backyards would be of equal importance to the health of the residents, as a great show’ in the front and an accumulatiou of filth elsewhere. Your correspondent’s reference to the “snarls of fox terriers” is hardly worth comment, and a visit to Devonport Road any time during the past few weeks would convince him that somebody is slacking. , Possibly your correspondent has been too busy looking for stray dogs to notice other matters. In conclusion may I say that a man with a broom has given us a visit to-day, so perhaps the “snarl” was not in vain. “HERE’S HOPING.”
