STOCK TRAFFIC
ON IUTUMENISED ROADS
. A suggestion by Cr T. Nickle that greater attention should be paid by the Matamata County Council to cause stock to travel on the bitumen, prepared for horse and driven stock traffic found favour at the last meeting of the council. Cr. Nickle pointed out that on such roads open drains were left, and these were often deep and dangerous. These had the tendency to cause stock to travel on the bitumtjn. The speaker suggested that if more pipes were used such drains could be covered. Other attention might bo paid so that the sides of roads could be used more than they were. Cr. P. R. Hawke said drovers often bunched their stock on the approach of vehicles, so that it was very difficult to get through. When stock were strung out there was not the same difficulty. Cr. J. Pohlen supported Cr. Nickle’s suggestion, saying he did a lot of riding and often droving, and always tried to use the sides of roads where possible. The council apparently favoured the idea, but did not pass any motion.
