YACHTING

MONOTYPE RACE

SUCCESS OF KAIAPOI

.SANDERS (TP .STARTS

TO-DAY

Auckland, Jan, 28

The first race in the Sanders Cup starts at 2 p.m. to-day on a windward and leeward course of 9 miles. The second race is timed for 10 a.m, on Thursday, and the third for 3 p.m. the same day.

The boats are competing at the Auckland Regatta on Wednesday. A race for the New Zealand Monotype championship in Cornwell Cup boats was sailed over the Takapuna Boating Club’s course yesterday afternoon, but, owing to the low state of the tide, considerable difficulty was experiences: by the competitors, five of whom retired. The race was won by Mr C. Banks, Kaiapoi, by 8s from Mr R. S. Beveridge, Christchurch, with Mr H. Strutter, Wellington, 21s later, third. The state of the tide made the starting line a short one and the 17 boats, well reefed, had considerable difficulty, on a lee shore, in clearing the wharf. Plimmerton and Tauranga were over the line at gunfire, but only Tauranga returned and Plimmerton was disqualified. The course, which was from the Bayswater wharf to a mark among the hulks, thence to the Northcote buoy and back to the starting line, twice round, gave the boats a beat to windward, a broad lead and a run. Most of the boats made short boards across the Channel to get to the head of the mud bank, but many carried too far and hit the bank, and their efforts to free themselves caused the crowd .much amusement. On the lead across Banks led Beveridge to the mark, followed by Thomas (Lyttelton), Martin, sen. (Hamilton), R. Waddel (Auckland), J. J. Mackay (Auckland), G. Carter (Tauranga), M .Pelham (Auckland), R. Todd (Otago) and the rest spaced out astern. Rounding the mark Martin capsized. Banks had a good lead from Beveridge, with Mackay moving up fast. Many of the competitors had trouble in crossing the bank to this mark and retired, and on the second round very little difference took place in the position of the boats. On the run home several were stuck on the bank.

The race started at 3.25 p.m. The finishing times were:—C. Banks (Kaiapoi), 4h 29m 495; R. S. Beveridge (Christchurch), 4h 29m 575; H. Strutter (Wellington), 4h 30m 18s; E. Thomas (Lyttelton), 4h 30m 21s; J. J. Mackay (Auckland), 4h 30m 455; P. Johnston (Auckland), 4h 32m 3s; M. Pelham (Auckland), 4h 32m 5 2s; R. Waddell (Auckland), 4h 33m 255; G. Carter (Tauranga), 4h 33m 31s; P. Swales (Auckland), 4h 39m 30s.

The result was C. Banks (Kaiapoi), 1; R. S. Beveridge (Christchurch), 2; H. Strutter (Wellington). 3. . A line finish was witnessed yesterday morning, when the skippers of the Cornwell Cup boats changed places with their forward hands. Nine boats were sent away on a windward and leeward course, once, round, and they were led over the Otago, with Kaiapoi, next, and the rest in a straight line. On the beat out to the mark Otago still had the lead, closely followed by Kaiapoi, Christchurch and Wellington. The boats made a great sight on the run back and Otago appeared to have the race won from Kaiapoi which was alongside, hut slightly astern. Kaiapoi, however, went round Otago’s stern taking her wind momentarily, but just sufficiently for Kaiapoi to win by Is.

The race started at 11.20 a.m. The finisßing times were:—Kaiapoi, 12h 15s; Otago, 12h 16s; Tauranga, 12h 2m; Wellington, 12h 2m 30s; Christchurch, 12h 3m; Plimmerton, 12h 3m 7s; Paremata, 12h 3m 20s; Whangarei, 12h 3m 455; Lyttelton, 12h 7m 2 2s.

The result was;—Kaiapoi (C. Randell and K. AVhitmore), 1; Otago (A. Young and R. Todd), 2; Tauranga (B. Snedden and S. Wilson), 3.
