NEWS IN TOWN TO-DAY

Surf Competitions'. Teams from the Tauranga Ladies, Whakatane, Papamoa, Mount Maun.ganui, Waihi and Auckland Clubs will compete in surf competitions at Mount Maunganui to-morrow. A good *programme has been prepared and the starting time is fixed for 1 p.nl.

Swimming Carnival. The Tauranga Swimming and Life Saving Club will hold a swimming carnival in the municipal baths on Monday evening next. The programme comprises sixteen events and a good evening’s' sport is assured for patrons.

Schnapper Fishing. A large party fishing from the launch Omokoroa yesterday, between Omokoroa and Matakana Island, secured 230 schnapper. The fish were in excellent condition and many of them weighed 71b. each. A young fisherman, B. Hartnett, also landed two good schnapper off the Railway Wharf yesterday, much to the envy of his young companions who are fishing again in a body to-day.

Excursion Train. Special trains to Mount Mauuganul from Tauranga and Taneatua on Wednesday next are advertised by the Railway Department.

Quail in Town. The large covey of quail that have made their home on the western side of the town between Fourth Avenue and the Domain are growing very tame. This morning a number of them were seen in Spring Street in the vicinity of the Presbyterian Church and on several occasions they have been noticed lately in the same locality in the early morning.

Heavy Cargoes. A considerable quantity of outward cargo is accumulating in the vicinity of the Railway Wharf prior to shipment to Auckland. A quantity of timber from Messrs AVatkins’ sawmill at Sulphur Point also waits shipment at the Railway Wharf jetty. Inward cargo consisting of several hundred drums of bitumen stacked along the temporary decking recently provided by the Harbour Board, is awaiting transport to Rotorua. A further consignment of sawmill building material, consisting of heavy principals, shafting, etc., for Existing Forests, Ltd. new sawmill at Oropi Is being discharged from the a.s. Alma. The material is being transported to the mill site by four motor lorries.

Trawler for Mayor Island. The fishing trawler which has been refitting in port, left for the fishing grounds off Mayor Island last night.

Shipments of Sheep. The s.s. Pakura has left Gisborne with a consignment of sheep for Orakie. The sheep are for the AA’eslfield market. Advice has been received by the harbourmaster, Mr A. Dickson, that the Pakura returns immediately to Tokomaru Bay to load sheep for Tauranga, and is expected to arrive here on Tuesday.

.St. John Ambulance. Private R. P. Faulkner and Private H. Taylor will be on duty at Mount Mauuganui to-morrow.
