FARM LABOUR

HOW TO SECURE MEN. During a discussion on ragwort, which was largely held in committee, Cr P. R. Hawke advised the Matamata County Council that a communication from the Commissioner had stated that the Unemployment Board would endeavour to secure labour for farmers provided application was made to the local certifying officer, and that wages offered and conditions of employment were reasonable. It did not appear to be generally realised that the Unemployment Board’s bureaux were primarily labour exchanges, although they had now come to be regarded primarily as relief depots. Thus, if any farmer was short of labour he was advised to inform the local certifying officer and give the wages and nature of work, etc.

Referring to unemployment workers who had been brought from Auckland for ragwort destruction, the clerk said that 15 out of 23 had returned after the New Year. Most of the others had called into the unemployment office and advised that they were not coming back.
