TRIP ABROAD

TOUR IN SOUTH AFRICA

The following are interesting extracts from a letter written by' Mr E. H. Snow who is at present travelling in South Africa, to his son Mr D’O Piers Snow, of Sixth Avenue. The letter was written from Bulawayo, on October Ist.

“We had a good trip from Australia to Durban taking 15 days via the Indian Ocean. We arrived at Durban on the 15th August after -a calm and pleasant voyage. On the 16 th August a severe gale swept the East Coast of Africa between Durban and Capetown, and one Italian passenger ship was nearly lost just outside Durban. The Captain said he never experienced such awful weather, and thought his ship was going to break in two. He never expected tp see port again. I was to leave Durban by the ‘Dullio’ (an Italian ship of 23,000 tons) at noon, but; the storm was so violent she and six other large steamers could not get out of the harbour until eighteen hours after sailing time. However, we left at 6 a.m. on the following Sunday, and had a calm passage down to East London. East London is quite a nice town with 21,000 whites, and 322,000 coloured people. After a month here I left on the 18th September for a 1400 mile trip to South Rhodesia: Nearly a TOO miles journey found me at Joberg—the city of gold—Jo’berg is booming. The population of Bulawayo is-about 12,000. Rhodesia is indeed a beautiful country. It took two nights and one day to get from Johannesburg to Bulawayo I arirved in Bulawayo on my. 80th birthday., Bulawayo. is 674 miles from Jo’berg. I am going back to East London in about three week’s time via Johannesburg.
