Visit by Two Auckland Fifteens TAURANGA TEAMS SUCCESSFUL. The Tauranga Rugby Union closed the season on Saturday with the visit of two teams from the Manusau Rovers Football Club. The senior team were the winners of the Auckland Senior B senior competition, and met the Tauranga Union’s seniors. The game was fast and was mainly between the forwards, Tauranga having a considerable advantage in weight. The visitors defended the southern line. Shortly after the start A. Strong ran through on the western wing and then punted, the ball going across for M., Gardiner to force. After resuming P, Gardiner kicked through, the ball going out in the Manukau territory. Tauranga pressed until Langton dribbled to midfield and a great run by Gardiner made further ground. Then Tauranga broke the rules and the visitors cleared from the resultant penalty. The home backs then handled .accurately and delivered several sharp attacks, but sound tackling by Manukau saved the position. The home forwards tightened the play and dribbled across, S. Heighway forcing. Hard forward play continued in the visitors’ territory and a length kick by - Motutere rolled across, Elliott forcing. Motutere made a fast fun and sent a pass in-field but the ball went astray. Elliott followed up a clearance kick and blocked the return, but M. Gardiner came round and saved by kicking to touch. After the bail came in Manukau were penalised and Gardiner cleared' Kingi carrying on and being brought down in the Manukau twenty-five. Gray made an opening and passed to Svenson who dodged over and touched down between the posts. Grey added the extras: Tauranga, 10;’ Manukau, 0. Early in the second half Hartnett showed out in a strong ruh and was stopped in the corner by Elliott. A long kick by S, Heighway carried play into the home territory. Murray came back quickly and was joined by Hartnett, who-was hurt as the result of a tackle, but was able to continue. .From a scrum Honiana set his backs .running, the winger, P. Gardiner, being run out close to the line. Tauranga pressed and eventually Elliott cleared. .The visiting forwards, tightened the play and pushed through, P, Gardiner -clearing. Stevens and S. Manukau hooKed from the first scrum and Bolton set his backs going; Sutherland being stopped in the home twenty-five. After loose Knight made an opening and carried on until. Castaing , cleared. Bolton was then responsible for starting a passing movement, which was held up by Mackrell. Tauranga infringed and Bolton sent up. a higft ball; which was followed up and went out in the home south-western corner. From the line-out Lund cut in smartly, and Tauranga cleared by the aid of a penalty. Outstanding play by. Benham saw him reach the Manukau line and he was tackled by Littlejohn. The . home Manguard pressed, and eventually Quigg cleared with a fine kick. Castaing made one of the best runs of the afternoon and then passed to Collard.
