TOWN QUEEN

CONCERT. IN TOWN HALL

The town hall'was well filled last night when the “Justus Entertainers’* presentedltconcert in aid of the Town Queen, Mrs Denis Ivory. Before the concert started, the Band, under the conductorship of Mr E. Patterson, played several selections outside the hall and later opened the programme with two numbers—a Fantasia “Darley Dale" and a March "Queen of the North." The Band shows; remarkable improvement, and their placing was warmly applauded. In the second half their selections were “Clarendon” and a march "The Humber."

A bright chorus by the Justus Company followed the Band, those on the stage being Mrs C. Steedman, Miss Edna Murray, Miss Sanderson, Miss Margaret Walsh, Miss Dorothy Wills, Mr Gilmore Rodgers, Mr A. E. Stephens, Mr Bruce Meikle, Mr Denis Ivory, With: Mrs Denis Ivory at the piano. The Company then remained grouped on the stage which was tastefully arranged as a drawing room.

In the programme'which followed, vocal solos were contributed 'by Madam Cora Melvin who sang most beautifully “Kiss Me Again," from “La Modiste," “I Wonder if Love is a Dream," "L’Amour toujours," and “Ma Curly Headed Babby," all with violin obligato by Mrs Florence Whitlock, M.R.S.T., who.played with perfect understanding; Miss Edna Murray, another Auckland singer of experience, who contributed “The Jewel Song" from Faust, "Indian Love Call,’* "Carmena,” and G6unod’s “Ave Maria;” Mr Gilmore Rodgers who gave , “Nita Gitana,” and "If all the Young Maidens;” Mr Norman Day "Our Little Home" -with Violin obligato by Mrfl.Whitlock, “Beware of the Ladles," "Old Barty” and “Little Mary Fawcett;” and Mr Edwards "The' Windmill” and "The Rose of Tralee." Madam Cora Melvin and Mr Norman Day were then heard r to great advantage in a duet “In the Garden of Roses.” An amusing topical number followed, by Messrs H, G. Rodgers, Bruce Meikle, A. E. Stephens and Denis Ivory, with due reference to the Mayoral Chain, the Ladies Rest Room, the Times Office and Mr Skinner, this proving very popular. To supply variation, Mr G.H. Wills gave two monologues at the piano which were very much appreciated and Mrs .T. Stenhouse and Miss Moira Cor" - n;i danced. • Mrs Stenhouse made her first public appearance in Tauranga and proved herself to be a very clever step dancer, while Miss Goughian appeared in a graceful Spanish dance.

Following a short interval Mr G. H. Wills, Miss Dorothy Wills, and Mr Bruce Meikle presented an amusing One Act Farce "Going Away.’ ’ Being on an every day subject—the fuss of going away, packing trunks and catjchlng taxis, trains, etc., —the sketch had a popular appeal, and in the hands of these capable entertainers was a great success.

A special word should be said of the accompaniste for, the evening, Mrs Denis Ivory, who played all the accompaniments most capably.' Bouquets were handed to all the lady performers, and Mr S. G. Willcock on behalf of the Town Queen Committee thanked all those who had assisted, particularly the artists from Auckland.
