BOWLING

Onehunga Wins Tourna- ; ment FINAL GAME THIS MORNING. Section play in the Tauranga Bowling Club’s fifteenth annual tournament was completed yesterday without the necessity of playing the ninth round. In Section A Livingstone’s Onehunga team came through without a loss, and Moncur’s Tauranga team had similar good fortune in Section B. Rarelv in any tournament have so many ‘’full hands” been scored, three S’s being scored, one on Wednesday and two yesterday. The most surprising game in the eighth round was that between Mantel! (Tauranga) and Crowley (Gisborne). Crowley was 16 when Mantell was two on the 9th head. Mantel 1 secured the 10th. shortened the heads and put on 19 points, finally winning 21-16. The visitors generally, despite the disappointment on the first day, expressed themselves as thoroughly pleased with their subsequent two days’ play. The green has been in splendid order throughout, for which every credit is due to the greenkeeper, Mr Pilcher. The bowlers expressed their appreciation of this fact in a tangible way this morning by making him a monetary gift. As one visiting bowler remarked, one of the most pleasing features of the tournament is the manner in which the ladies co-operate in providing morning and afternoon tea during the tournament. In this the Club is exceedingly fortunate and certainly appreciates fully. Yesterday the military band, in camp nearby, came to the green and rendered a short but bright musical programme, and the best thanks of the Club and the bowlers are due to them for their kindly act. With the section oiay completed it was possible to play the final game this morning. Again the green was in splendid order, and the weather was all that could be desired. THE FINAL. The final game between Tauranga and Onehunga was played this morning. The teams were: Tauranga Onehunga Carew McMasters Allely Banks Teasey Robertson Moncur (s) Livingstone (s) The green was in perfect order, drawing and running nicely. Tauranga won the toss and both leads put up good shots. When skips changed Tauranga were 2 up. Moncur drew another, Livingstone put in a fast one but gave Tauranga another. Moncur blocked, but Livingstone drew the shot. On the second head Banks put up two nice shots, but Allely's first bowl took the jack with a beautiful shot. Robertson drove the jack to the ditch, but left Tauranga still 1 up, but he got the shot with his second. Moncur drove twice but missed.

Carew drew the shot on the third head and still held it when the skips went down, but Livingstone's first scored and Moncur failed to change it. McMasters’ first bowl on the next head was a toucher —a beautiful shot, but he was rested out to leave Tauranga two. Robertson killed the head. Both Carew and McMasters put in good bowls on the replay and Onehunga was 3 up when the thirds had played* Moncur’s second drive killed the head again. Carew, who was playing consistently well, drew the shot, which the seconds failed to change, but Robertson took it out—Onehunga 4 up. Moncur drove twice, but missed, leaving Onehunga four. The next head was open until Allely put in a beautiful toucher. Robertson’s second drive took the jack to the ditch, giving Onehunga one, Teasey putting in a good second shot. Livingstone drew another. Moncur, however, drew a beautiful shot on the edge of the ditch for one. Livingstone failed to alter it.

Both leads and seconds put in good shots on the sixth head and Tauranga was one up when skips changed, and they failed to change the position. Onehunga 7, Tauranga 2. On the seventh head. Banks drew the shot. Honour's second bowl took the jack through with a wonderful shot, but Livingstone, with a lucky wick got a point. Onehunga were playing the long heads effectively. Carew drew the shot on the Bth head which finally went to Tauranga for 3.—Onehunga 8, Tauranga 5. McMasters put in a toucher with his first shot in the 9th head —his second less than 6 inches from his first. Allely's first was an excellent shot, but the head looked dangerous for Tauranga so Teasey killed it. Both teams were playing good bowls, and the ninth head went to Tauranga for one. The 10th head was open until Allely put in a good shot, but Banks rested him out for one. Teasey just missed the jack and Robertson put in a good shot second. Moncur drove one out, but. missed with his second. Livingstone drove to take out a Tauranga bowl for 4, but missed. On the 11th head the first five bowls were short, but Teasey with his second knocked a Tauranga bowl into shot. Livingstone broke the head up and secured one, Moncur failing to alter the position. In the 12th head Carew put in the shot bowl very close to the jack and Banks placed a good second. Robertson’s first took Tauranga’s shot out. Teasey drove but missed. Livingstone put in another counter and Moncur missed with both drives. The thirteenth head went to Tauranga for two, and Onehunga secured a singleton on the 14th with the kitty in the ditch.

Carew and McMaster in the 15th head put in excellent shots, Carew lying shot. There was no alteration in the head when skips changed. Livingstone’s bowl knocked out one of his own up but still left him shot. Moncur failed to alter the position. Onehunga 15, Tauranga 8. Allely's first bowl in the 16th head took the jack nearly to the ditch, and his second, with a wick, gave Tauranga another. Teasey drew a third. Robertson drove the jack to the ditch, fiut still left Tauranga three. Both Livingstone’s bowls found the ditch, and Moncur failed to improve the position.—Onehunga 15, Tauranga 11. The seventeenth head saw some interesting play, and with the jack in the ditch Tauranga secured four. Livingstone’s saver balancing on the ditch and then falling in. This made the score 15 all. The remaining heads saw some excellent bowling. but the Onehunga team, playing shot for shot, made the task difficult despite some excellent saving shots of Honour's, and on the 20th head he was six down on the board. The task of getting the required number was too great. Lying four down, Moncur tried unsuccessfully to kill the head, Onehunga winning 2415.

This is the third occasion on which Mr Livingstone has won the tournament. Last year he wmn with the same team.
