“HE WALKED IN HER SLEEP.”

AN EMPHATIC SUCCESS. This American farce which comes from the Gaiety Theatre, New York, was presented last night to a large audience at the Town Hall under the direction of Harold G. Hobday the producer for the Auckland Theatre Guild. Except for minor hesitances which one must always .allow for on a first night, the performance reflects the 'greatest credit on all concerned. The story concerns a middle aged man who is a golf enthusiast and has married a lady (his second wife) many years his junior. This lady is a bridge enthusiast and has no time whatever for the famous game. Into the home comes a man from the great open spaces whom the golfer suspects of having designs on his wife. He. takes into his confidence his young butler who has had some legal training. The advice acted upon results disastrously. There are many other characters drawn by the author too numerous to mention in detail. Mr Harold Hobday, as the golfer, gives a performance which justifies the high tributes which have been paid him by the Auckland and Wellington press. He also shows his ability as a thoroughly capable producer. Great praise is due to Miss Dorothy Wills, and to Mr Ken Liggett in the roles of the young wife and the butler. Very satisfactory portrayals of their respective parts were given by Misses Betty Hardy, Elinor Broad and Mr M. D. Laurenson. A small part which was a gem of acting was entrusted to Mrs H. P. Butts as a negress cook. A well merited tribute was paid to this lady by the producer at the fall of the curtain.

The production will be presented again this evening and it should be mentioned that one half of the net proceeds will be handed over by Mr Hobday to the local Relief Committee.
