Tauranga Union’s Competitions

GILBEY CUP MATCHES OX SATURDAY.

A meeting of the Management Committee of the Tauranga Rugby Union was held on Monday last. Present; Messrs Guinness (in the chair). Hare, Hardy, Riggir, Fisher, Maloney, Keene and the Secretary (Mr M. Simmonds). Congratulations were extended by Mr Guinness to the Cadets Juniors on retaining the Mclntosh Shield against Opotiki High School Old Boys last Saturday.

Resolved that Te Puke Juniors be given next Saturday for their challenge for the Mclntosh Shield, the game to he played at 3 p.m. on No. 1 ground.

Mr Guinness also extended the congratulations of the Union to the Matakana senior team on winning the Jordan Cup. It was decided to play the Gilhey Cup as a knock-out competition, the games to commence next Saturday. The previous minute dealing with this trophy was rescinded.

Mr Riggir, on behalf of the Union, thanked the Ladies’ Committee who so capably functioned in making the Ball such a success.—lt was resolved that a letter of appreciation he sent to the ladies of the Committee.

Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment; Bay of Plenty Times Ltd., 18s lid; Te Puke expenses, £1 ss; Opotiki Union, £1 ss.

Insurance.—As several members of the Committee left early, it was decided to hold over all insurance claims until a full meeting could be had.

University Match.—The President mentioned meeting Mr Roche O’Shea, Registrar of the Auckland University, on Saturday last. Mr O’Shea enquired of the possibility of the students visiting Tauranga within the next few weeks.—The Secretary was instructed to write the Secretary of the Club on the matter. A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union was held at Te Puke yesterday. The following letter was received from the Secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Union, Mr W. Anderson, Napier, anent the recent tour: “Our team has now arrived home, and from the report of the manager it appears to have been one of the most enjoyable tours so far undertaken. This was made so by the actions of the officials of the various Unions visited, and I am directed- to forward my Union’s thanks and appreciation to your Union and its officials for the attention and courtesy bestowed upon the team. The manager desires especially to mention Mr Guinness.” Nominations for North Island, Team.—The following names were forwarded for selection: —Messrs P. Howell, T. Whiteley, J. Connelly and A. H. Cullimore.

Challenges.—The following challenges were received: Shalfoon Shield, Tauranga Juniors; Mclntosh Shield, Te Puke Juniors. —It was resolved to forward both challenges to the proper quarters. Shield and Cup Fixtures.—The following dates have been fixed: Sept. 9, Parata Cup match, Opotlki v. Whakatane, at Opotiki. Mr Seville referee. Sept. 16 or 23, final Shield challenge, Rangitaiki v. Opotiki, at Matata. Originally, the 16th was fixed, but as the Rangitaiki Union wanted a choice of dates the 23rd was added. These dates were fixed to give all Unions concerned fair and impartial treatment. Shield Balances. —The Secretary reported considerable delay in compiling and forwarding a balance sheet of all Shield and Parata Cup matches. These returns must be in the hands of the Bay Secretary within ten days of a match. Attention is also drawn to some Unions claiming £5 for ground charges out of the gate. A minute of the last annual meeting on this matter shows that only 10 per cent, may be claimed with a maximum of £5. School Tour. —This tour was definitely cancelled on account of lack of games and casualties. All Unions are thanked for their offers of assistance.

Appreciation.—The action of the Secretary in thanking the Tauranga hotelkeepers in connection with the Hawke’s Bay team’s visit was approved. The profit on the game is about £lB, after providing for the subsidy to the Opotiki juniors. PAKATA CUP SEMI-FINAL.. The Opotiki Rugby representatives will play Whakatahe at Opotiki next Saturday in the semi-final of the Parata Cup. The Opotiki team is as follows:--Backs, Fox, Temple. L. Kelly, H.
