TE ARAWA DEFEAT MATATUA.
The Arawa tribal Rugby team staved off a strong challenge for the Tainul-Maniapoto Cup at Arawa Park, Rotorua, on Wednesday, when they defeated the Matatua team. Te Arawa scored four unconverted tries to one by Matatua in a game that was fast and willing from start to finish, the final scores being 12 to 3. Te Arawa backs came up to expectations by opening up the play in spectacular and unorthodox style, but they found the defence very solid. It was not till the last minute or two that Te Arawa’s backs got going in an orthodox passing movement right out to Hohapata on the wins, who scored a brilliant try. A feature of the game was the number of scrum infringements, and if Matatua had possessed a reliable ■ place-kicker they could have put two or three of the penalties awarded, in the right place. The teams were:
Te Arawa: Hataraka, Hohapata, T. Morrison. M. Howell, P. Howell, E. Howell (captain). Potaka, Te Ngaio, Heke, Soloman, Te Purei, Taiapa, Whiteley, Raymond, Mackie. Matatua: Rare - , Ngatal, McLeod, Bidois, Hall, Harawera (captain), Trainor, Tangitu, Talwhata, Toma, Edwards, Broderick, Mate, Horne, Ririnui: Dr. Wallis was referee.
The visiting Matatua tribal team and their supporters were the guests of Te Arawa Tribal Club at Ohinemutu In the evening, when a complimentary dinner was tendered them in Tunohopu meeting-house. Later in the evening a dance was held in Tamatekapua where the traditional courtesies were honoured between the visitors and tljeir hosts. .During the course of the dinner, Dry W. S. Wal-, lis, who refereed the match, paid a tribute to the excellent spirit in which the game had been played and the good exhibition which had been given by both sides.
