iMatch for Te Hurinui Apanui Shield rangitaiki defeats ticking a, a record crowd gathered at Mataon Saturday afternoon to witness the match for the Te Hurinui Apa--1 1 Shield between the Rangitaiki Tauranga representatives. The B me was mainly a forward contest, «Uh both sets fairly evenly matched, hut the Rangitaiki backs possessed better combination than the TauTanga rearguard, and this was the main factor in enabling Rangitaikl to register a comfortable win. The first score came ten minutes after jbl start, when the speedy and weighty .-three-quarter, Hohapata, crossed in the corner. Twenty-five minutes later Raerino added the second try for the Shield holders and p Rowell converted, giving RangiJ iki a lead of eight points at the interval. It was generally anticipated that the challengers would make a good showing in the second half and for half-an-hour they kept the score down. In the final fifteen minutes the superior combination of the holders told its tale and Tama, an outstanding forward, gained two tries, one °f whicll was converted hy p. Howell, while the only points for Tauranga were represented by a penalty goal kicked by 11. 'Grey, and when the final whistle sounded the scores were 16 to 3 in favour of Rangitaiki. Certainly on the day’s play the better team won and they are ■to be commended on the very fine ami consistent showing for which they have been responsible against all opponents this’season. Their successes have not been flukes and are due to physical fitness, a thorough knowledge of the game, and effective combination. The victors have still two matches for the Shield this season, and undoubtedly they will be capable of giving a good account of themselves when they meet the Galatea and Opotiki representatives. The President of -the Rangitaiki Onion, Mr Fred Burt —a former Tauranga representative and as • good a back as ever donned a jersey—was well pleased witli the result, and his enthusiasm and helpfulness certainly goers a long way in encouraging the Rangitaikl men. Howell was the ideal perceptive back and although he was well watched made numerous openings. Hohapata played his usual sound game and kept the opposing backs very busy. Tama and Whiteley were the outstanding forwards. The Tauranga backs were patchy and on the day Tassell was easily the best. In addition to making many good runs he heavy tackling to do and came through very creditably. Rayment had a busy day and was very sound, in defence. Grey was always where the play was strenuous.
